Their same store sales increases in Jan./Feb. seem to indicate  a slow economic recovery. Note the leap in on-line sales, perhaps both weather and culture related.

Despite a series of snowstorms in the Midwest and East, Macy’s Inc. managed to increase its sales in January, the retailer said Thursday.

Macy’s, which has a store at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, reported total sales of $1.64 billion for the four-week period, up 4 percent from $1.58 billion in February 2009, according to a news release. Sales grew 3.4 percent in January.

Same-store sales rose 3.7 percent year over year, compared to 3.4 percent the month before. Online sales, which are included in the same-store figures, jumped 38 percent.

Although winter storms hit Macy’s key markets in February, the retailer still turned in a good performance, said Terry Lundgren, chairman president and CEO.

“If not for the storms, we estimate that our February same-store sales would have been up approximately 5 percent,” Lundgren said in the release.

Macy’s, with corporate offices in Cincinnati and New York City, operates about 850 department stores in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.
